Sargon of Akkad: Contributions to Later Empires Evan Bouleris World History I Mr. Hersh Monday, November 9th Ancient Mesopotamia was a geographical area in modern-day Iraq that centers around the Tigris-Euphrates river system and is considered the beginning of advanced society. Mesopotamia encompassed several different civilizations and the first city states. The Mesopotamian civilization spanned from the Sumerian Empire in approximately 3500 B.C.E. to the end of the Assyrian empire in the 7th century. One notable leader was Sargon of Akkad, who started the first recognizable empire, won significant military victories, built substantial infrastructure and bureaucracy, and left a legacy large enough to span millennia. In 612 B.C.E., towards the end of the Assyrian Empire, there were still plays being written about Sargon. According to a stone tablet artifact that is thought to be Sargon’s ancient autobiography, Sargon was born to a priestess in secret and cast into the Euphrates river in a basket. He was then found and raised by â€Å"Akki the Irrigator†, a gardener for the king of the Sumerian city of Kish, Ur-Zababa. While the details are not clear, Sargon was able to become the king’s cup-bearer (responsible for delivering drinks to the king ), an honorable job because the cup-bearer had to be trusted not to poison the king. Statue Of King Chephren Essay The extraordinary statue of King Chephren is a masterpiece of sculpture in the round. This work is 168cm tall, 96cm long and 57cm wide, which was the approximate size of the king. The artist who created this sculpture is unknown, as it was found when Mariettes workmen were exploring the favissa of Chephrens valley temple in 1860. The statue was built during the reign of King Chephren, which historians estimate lasted from 2540-2505 BC. The statue is a cut block of Diorite, a granular crystalline igneous rock. This work can be found in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo Ground Floor, room 42, or if you are unable to visit Cairo, images of the work can be found in the Official Catalogue of The Egyptian Museum of Cairo pages 64,65 Chephren was the son of Cheops. The enthroned king rests one hand flat on his knee while he holds a folded piece of material in the other. He wears a nemes headdress with pleaded lappets. Attached to his chin is the sign of his dignity, the ceremonial beard. He is also dressed in a shendjyt, a type of short pleated kilt. Two lions support the kings seat, one on each side. The two lions are to provide the king with both power and protection. On each side of the throne the motif of the unity of the two lands, or sema-tawy, is etched in high relief. The sema-tawy, is composed of the heraldic plants of the Two Lands. Lilies, for the south, and papyrus, for the north, are knotted around the hieroglyphic sign for union. The statue of King Chephren contains implied detail, meaning that very few lines in the right positions can make up for a completely textured work. This feature causes your eye to start at the kings face and move around the statue, without being confused by excessive detail. The throne is elevated about a foot above ground level, so the king would appear more powerful to worshippers bowing before the statue. The work is covered with symbolism, including the protection of the lions, the sema-tawy, and the falcon, Horus, God of the sky, perched on Chephrens back protecting the kings head with his wings. Excluding the fact that one hand is clenched in a fist and the other is resting on his knee, the work is symmetrical. This work was constructed between the years 2540-2505 BC during the reign of King Chephren to praise him as a great ruler of Egypt. No one knows exactly when the work was sculpted or who may have participated in the creation of the statue. The Great Sphinx and the second pyramid in Giza were also created during Chephrens rule, making it a very prudential part of Egypts artistic history. I was flipping through a book of ancient Egyptian art trying to find a piece to analyze when my finger slipped upon the statue of King Chephren. Most of the Egyptian statues were constructed of limestone, but the statue of Chephren was made of a black stone, which immediately caught my attention. I learned that it was Diorite and is much harder than limestone, and more difficult to work with. The work is very exquisite. It is obvious that the artists that worked on it was very talented and must have created other great works to be entrusted with creating the Kings image in a statue. I respect the time, effort, and talent that must have gone into such a work, but Im not spiritually moved by the piece. The statue does not relate to me and thus I can not comprehend it and all of the meaning and symbolism it may have once had to ancient people.

In conclusion, the continuing rage that Robert builds up inside himself over Rowenas death plays a great role in his eventual self-destruction. Secondly, Barbara dOrsey makes herself an important part of many mens lives, and this ends in devastation. It is also made visible by other characters in the novel. Barbara, and Taffler go to visit James Villiers, Barbaras past lover while he is in the hospital. Robert witnesses the visit and the nurse approaches him saying, Just dont ask me about that woman. I dont know how she dares to come here (89). The nurse is angry that Barbara shows no compassion to the injured Villiers. Not only is Villiers in physical pain but the emotional pain which Barbara inflicts on him visiting, while accompanied by another man is devastating to him. James real feelings on the situation cannot be voiced because of the extent of his injuries, but due to his reaction the reader may assume he is emotionally distraught. Even Barbaras sister Juliet comments on her sisters behaviour. Juliet writes in her transcripts that, after the visit to Villiers, the affair between [Barbara] and Robert Ross developed quickly. ] It seemed inhuman. Barbara never went to see Taffler again (152). The inhumanity which leaves Juliet shocked and dismayed reveals how selfish and ignorant Barbara is to her lovers. As soon as Barbara spots a weakness in her lovers she abandons them and moves on to the next man. Barbara shows no shame in her actions. In conclusion, at the times her lovers need her the most she is not there to help them deal with emotional anxiety which leads to their internal destruction. Thirdly, it is made visible at the beginning of the novel that the absence of a mother figure in Roberts life has an emotional effect on him. Robert does not remember his mother being around very much as a small child. Mrs. Ross has gone through many losses in her life beginning with her father, brother, and now her daughter. This causes Mrs. Ross to breakdown and place copious amounts of grief on Robert which contributes to his internal destruction. Robert is deemed to be Rowenas guardian which makes him responsible for her possessions after her death. Mrs. Ross explains to Robert how it is his duty to kill Rowenas rabbits but he questions, Why do the rabbits have to be killed? Because they were hers. But that cant possibly make any sense. Nonetheless, they must be killed' (22-23). Mrs. Ross believes that it must be Robert who kills Rowenas rabbits because they are a constant reminder of Rowena. Since Robert was Rowenas guardian it is his responsibility to get rid of her most beloved possessions. If the rabbits are gone then Robert will realize that Rowena is gone too. Robert refuses to kill the rabbits because he feels he has let Rowena down once by not watching her, causing her death. He would not let her down again by killing her rabbits too. Robert resents his mother for asking him to do this and it contributes to his decision to leave for war. Ever since Rowenas death, Roberts mother begins to drink heavily. After Rowenas funeral, Mrs. Ross becomes intoxicated and has a conversation with Robert. She knows he is going away to become a soldier and she tells him he can go to hell. Im not responsible. Im just another stranger. Birth I can give you but life I cannot (28). She wants Robert to know that she did give life to him by giving birth to him but it is impossible for her to keep someone alive. Mrs. Ross is distancing herself from Robert because she knows that he is going away to war and there is a good chance he too will die. This conversation is the final push which leads him leave for war the next morning. Thus, going to war is Roberts ultimate downfall which leads to his destruction. In conclusion, woman are an important part of the mental stability of men. Through Rowena, Barbara, and Mrs. Ross it is evident that woman characters give male characters emotional problems. In the novel The Wars by Timothy Findley, female characters cause internal conflicts between the male characters and themselves. Women influence men everyday without even knowing it.
